open lab

In 2023, Ledpulse partnered with MONOPOL Berlin to create a large-scale installation within one of Monopol’s historic exhibition halls, originally an old distillery. The expansive space, with its towering ceilings, became the setting for an ambitious artistic structure, designed and installed over the course of a month. The project was completed just in time for Monopol’s Open Studio event, part of the Kultur Sommer Festival in Berlin. Following this, the installation became a creative laboratory for artists, with a focus on integrating spatial audio technology to enhance the immersive experience. The project culminated in the Organysmo event, a live showcase that merged digital art, sound, and performance, resulting in a captivating display of artistic and technological innovation.

INMERSIVE NEW MEDIA ART INSTALLATION

ORGANYSMO

This ambitious project required a month of planning and preparation, including construction schematics, the installation of anchoring points, motor setup, truss assembly, and the custom creation of steel cable suspension systems. Each of the 50 x 50 cm display modules was suspended at varying heights, creating a dynamic structure. Additionally, energy and signal cabling were custom built to support this complex network, ensuring seamless control and content generation through TouchDesigner.

ARTIST HUB COLLABORATIONS

The design, installation, and setup of the system were completed just in time for Monopol’s Open Studio event. Following this phase, a series of artistic collaborations began, where the focus shifted to audio integration in the pieces. With Christopher Manhey as the guest artist, we integrated a spatial audio system using GENELEC technology. This renowned brand is known for its advanced smart active monitoring systems, providing unparalleled precision and clarity in sound reproduction, making it ideal for immersive audio experiences.

Jesus Ortega led the design, installation, and control of the audio system, ensuring seamless integration with the artwork on a sonic level. The audio system enabled artists to explore the spatial dimensions of sound, enhancing the overall sensory experience.

By the end of September, after several lab sessions and artistic collaborations, the Organysmo event was held as the culmination of this creative process, showcasing the results with various artists. This large-scale project was designed, constructed, and managed from start to finish by Juan Barrera and Jesus Ortega, solidifying it as a major artistic milestone for our team

"A living laboratory of artistic innovation, bringing together spatialized audio and interactive volumetric display enviroments."

Collaboration and Artistic Integration

The installation was completed just in time for Monopol’s Open Studio event from September 11th to 13th, 2023, as part of Berlin’s Kultur Sommer Festival agenda.

Jesus Ortega and Juan Barrera led the rigging design and structure preparation, working closely with Paula Riquelme on the installation of the anchoring points at height. Together with José Alarcón, they installed the primary grid for the suspension points of the individual display modules. This grid was suspended by four motor-controlled anchor points, allowing altitude control of the entire structure. Once the primary assembly was completed, custom steel cables were fabricated, and a precise cable management system was designed to ensure flawless execution. This project also served as a laboratory for the production of a similar installation for Volvo Art Session in Zurich later that year.

The rigging system included 1-ton DMX motors, shackles, and both textile and steel slings for suspending the main truss structure. Custom steel cables connected the modules, which were positioned with millimeter precision across the X, Y, and Z axes. Ethernet and power cables, connected in series, unified the operation of the volumetric Dragon O2 displays into one cohesive system.
