Salone del Mobile 2024

In March 2024, Opposite United in Milan revealed an extraordinary audiovisual installation created by Verum Tempus in collaboration with LedPulse. Central to this installation was the Dragon, a dynamic volumetric lighting system that blurred the lines between the digital and physical realms, creating an immersive and interactive environment for visitors. The installation took place in a room entirely covered with mirrors on the floor and walls, enhancing the audience’s perception and interaction with the Dragon. Some of the Dragon’s modules featured mirrored surfaces on their tops, further amplifying the kaleidoscopic effect, where light and movement intertwined to create infinite reflections of the space and the audience’s identity.

LARGE SCALE INSTALLATIONS

FROM PAPERS TO LIGHT

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The installation featured 54 static Dragon modules and 6 additional dynamic modules powered by Kinetic Lights technology from DLB. These 6 modules were equipped with motors that could move vertically, controlled in real-time via DMX. This allowed not only the lighting to shift but also the physical movement of the Dragon’s components, enhancing the audience’s immersive experience.

To ensure safety, the lower sections of the Dragon were fitted with padded polycarbonate panels, protecting the visitors from potential contact with the modules placed at average head height. This thoughtful modification allowed for an engaging experience without compromising on safety.

Structure: Volumetric lighting installation with mirrored floors and walls
Modules: 54 static Dragon modules + 6 dynamic modules with Kinetic Lights technology Motorized Movement: 6 motors controlled in real-time via DMX to move Dragon modules vertically Safety Features: Polycarbonate padding on lower modules
Functionality: Dual-purpose as a performance stage and interactive art piece
Audio: Custom 4.1 system with spatial audio configuration

"A space where utopian technology and human presence converge"

During Design Week, a series of live performances took place within the installation, adding layers of audio-visual complexity to the environment. These performances included:

Percussions of Teatro La Scala Maya Schenfeld
CTM
XEXXA
Jim C. Nedd with Hansel Castro and Carlos Russo

Each of these performances included live control of the Dragon’s lighting and motors, allowing for customized interaction with the space. When no performances were taking place, the installation looped 3 pre-programmed audiovisual pieces with visuals and audio synchronized in real-time, ensuring a continuous, immersive experience for visitors.

A cyborg-like installation bridging technology and human experience

+Opposite United  project exemplifies Verum Tempus’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of immersive digital art. The innovative integration of Kinetic Lights technology with the Dragon’s volumetric lighting system created a dynamic, multi-sensory environment that invited constant interaction between technology, performance, and the audience. The inclusion of live-controlled lighting and motors during performances elevated the immersive experience, while the custom spatial audio system ensured the sound design was as immersive and responsive as the visual elements. With performances from renowned artists like Percussions of Teatro La Scala, Maya Schenfeld, CTM, XEXXA, and Jim C. Nedd with Hansel Castro and Carlos Russo, the installation transformed into a fluid, multi-dimensional space where light, sound, and human interaction coexisted in perfect harmony.
